Nam

Located on the corner of Dean Street, this unsung hero championing Vietnamese street food is a fast and healthy option for the hungry time-conscious diner looking for bowls of steaming hot silky ribbons of pho, or refreshing vermicelli salad.

The compact, casual interior features traditional, handmade Vietnamese lanterns, clashing wonderfully with the stainless steel counter embellished with Communist-style graphics. This fun, fresh and innovative theme is continued into their food- pots of tea leaves are placed on the counter for you to indulge in their fragrances before making your pick.

Although the menu is limited: pho, bun noodles (vermicelli with your choice of toppings served with the famously pungent fish sauce), summer rolls and the recently introduced banh mi (airy, crusty baguettes stuffed with your choice of filling) this is an option which will satisfy your Asian food craving for a bargain £4.90 per bowl, with unashamedly full-on, authentic flavours, unlike its more popular rival Pho. It’s also vegetarian-friendly, with vegetable summer rolls and stock soup base, yet satisfies carnivores with the classic beef, chicken and pork options too.

However, I suspect they use a lot of MSG in their food, particularly as the Pho often leaves you with an unpleasant, parched feeling in your mouth (a tell-tale sign.) Having said this, Nam is still a good Vietnamese restaurant to try (a LOT better than Pho!)
